One of the exciting developments in writing is the rise of "publishing on demand," giving authors more control over the appearance -- and the profits -- of their works. But what if you're not comfortable with the prospects of designing your own book cover? Then let us do it! Here are some recent covers we have created at Design by Bowen.
Delta Queen: A Novel. For this love story set on an old-fashioned riverboat, we wanted a dream-like cover. To create that effect, we started with a digital photo of The Delta Queen's famous paddlewheel and the trail of white water it leaves in its wake. We used PhotoShop to turn the photograph into a painting. We added big white lettering of the cover's title, creating the effect of a hand-painted poster.
Elk River Ghosts, Tales & Lore. Author Mack Samples had a photo he had taken of the Elk River that he wanted to use on the cover of his new book. The photo was rather gray and pale, but had very nice lines. We scanned the picture into the computer, then enhanced it, bringing out the reds and browns, quite appropriate for the topic of the book. We then sampled the dark, rich brown of the improved photo to create the border of the cover, which brought out the bold white letter of the titles.
Mystery on the Delta Queen. The challenge in this cover was to signal "mystery" at first glance, but also to preserve some of the romance of riverboating that also is central to the story. We went with the contrasting of stark black and white with the beautiful shot of a rainbow over the boat's signature red paddlewheel. Also, we wanted a typeface that subtly suggested a typewriter, because an old-fashioned manual typewriter plays a part in the plot.
